One of the most renowned figures of the Taiwanese New Wave, Edward Yang’s film is a chronicle of a couple’s disintegrating relationship, set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernizing Taipei. Independent and financially successful, A-Jen is steadily climbing the career ladder in real estate development. Together with her boyfriend A-Long, a former baseball player now working in his own textile shop, the two plan to emigrate to the United States. As their shared vision of the future begins to crumble, the drama of their relationship is mirrored by their home city—irreversibly changed, alienated, and transformed into a distorted reflection of childhood memories.
