1996-ieji, Taivanui ruošiantis surengti pirmuosius tiesioginius prezidento rinkimus, Kinija pradeda didelio masto karines pratybas, siekdama paveikti rinkimų rezultatus. Penkiolikmetis Džou – pačiame paauglystės įkarštyje. In 1996, as Taiwan prepares to hold its first direct presidential election, China launches large-scale military exercises in an attempt to influence the outcome. Fifteen-year-old Zhou is in the throes of adolescence. With the looming threat of war, the prospects for the expansion of Zhou’s father’s real estate business become uncertain, and the atmosphere at home grows equally oppressive. Rebelling against his despotic father, Zhou secretly takes a job at a billiard hall, where he befriends older youths of questionable reputation. He begins skipping classes and retreats into silence, deepening the rift between himself and his father. This quietly passing time—marked by the threat of war, political change, and the grimaces of an uncertain future—silently shapes not only their daily lives, but their future as well. N-7
